Chapter Eighteen
The downtown National Gardens Park occupied seven city blocks and was an even mix of natural green spaces and concrete. It was Guatemala City's answer to Central Park and with more than a thousand people congregating, that made it an easy place to blend in. Richard sat on a deteriorated park bench of warn wood and rusty metal supports, all of which was covered with various tags of graffiti. After twenty-one years with the F.B.I. Richard had learned to accept the fact that waiting was sometimes part of the game. Still, he didn't like someone else abusing his time, especially when he had so much to do. To make matters worse, he knew Isabel would be leaving and, while he didn't want to admit it, he loved having her close to him.
He took another visual survey around the park. To his left, a small group of kids were jumping anxiously around an ice cream vendor who had just rolled his cart next to a cascading fountain. In the distance, two teenagers played in the grass with a bright red Coca Cola Frisbee. Details. It was the nature of Richard's business. Closer to him an attractive local woman with white short-shorts walked her dog, a precocious Shih Tzu that wore a yellow collar, lavender vest and pink nail polish over its claws. The woman's ass was perfect and that occupied him for a long second. When Richard turned back to his right there they were. Two suitcases. And I stood behind them with enough room to escape if necessary.
"Nothing beats a well exercised Latina ass." I said in an attempt to break the ice.
"One of the few pleasures of this place I guess," Richard said. "How you been kid?"
"I've been better - and worse."
"I remember." He said with a smile. "Not too many people out there with a history as colorful as yours."
âI thought you could use these.â I said, pushing the luggage closer.
âThanks. I have a friend who will be especially grateful.â
âSo. What brings you all the way down here? It canât the faint trail of me.â
âI was tracking a child pornography ring from the field office in Boston. That led me here. Was in-country for three hours when I got the call regarding our dead Agents down by the port.â
âKiddy porn? Sick bastardsâ
âThatâs right. You got a kid now. How old is she? Four?â
âThree. Four in August.â
âThis shit hits home, doesnât it.â He said. As much as I resisted, Richard was reconnecting and we both knew it. âYou ever think about what itâs going to be like when sheâs old enough to use that carp youâre peddling back in the States?â
âIâll be out of this racket by then.â
âYou sound pretty sure about that son.â
âIâll be out. One way or another.â
âLetâs hope itâs not another.â
âSo where do we go from here? Go our separate ways, never to hear or see from each other again? Fine by me.â I said, regretting it as soon as the words left my mouth.
âYouâre in a bit of a pickle George.
